Greetings from Nicole Anderson-Cobb, PhD, Playwright & Founder of Samaritan Road Production Company. Thank you for visiting this site and for interest in learning more about Samaritan Road Production Company.
So, whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy does SRP exist you ask...well, let me holler at you for a minute:
Question: What is Samaritan Road Productions anyway?
Samaritan Road Production Company is an umbrella entity for plays, courses, workshops and consulting/program review focused on various kinds of conflict resolution and personal and group transfromation.
Thus, through our products, we examine conflicts and provide a range of services to promote and personal, organizational and community renewal.
Question: What is behind the name "Samaritan Road"?
What can I tell you? I got "a thing" for Samaritans.
At times, I think of myself of a "modern day Samaritan" of John 4 & Luke 10
In the case of the Samaritan woman of John 4, this woman is a descendant of a despised people…hmm
On top of that she is a woman---placing her again on the margins of a marginalized people…hmm
And she was a sister forced to pursue her daily work alone to avoid the criticism of others…hmm
So, yeah, I can profoundly relate to that Samaritan woman. But, Jesus broke through the racial, religious, gender, cultural divisions and the baggage of that day to reach her.
Consequently, THAT encounter between Christ and this Samaritan woman---steeped in history, cultural hatred and gender bias---ebbed and flowed between acknowledgement, skepticism, doubt, trust, frank dialogue on both sides, vulnerability, realization and greater understanding---resulting in transformation for all involved.
...And its those kinds of transformative encounters I want to foster in EVERY Samaritan Road Production play, classes and worshop encounter.
Question: Ok, so you've explained one of your influences, but why is Samaritan Road Production Company NECESSARY exactly?
Well, this is where the other biblical Samaritan is useful. The Samaritan traveler of Luke 10 is one who---though again a member of a despised community---was the one who chose to serve, finds the courage to help, dares to minister and has the audacity to offer kindess, to the stranger.
So that story resonates for me---not because there is an actual Samaritan Road---but because in all of our daily journeys, we all have to decide EVERYDAY how, when, where and whether or not to be compassionate ...or do you focus on self-preservation, habits, fears... the notion that it's someone else's responsibility to behave differently.
In this spirit, ALL Samaritan Road Productions projects requires that we look critically at difficult issues and sort out which path we will each trod---on our personal roads between Jericho and Jerusalem.
Question: Why have you selected plays, classes and workshops as you medium of choice ?
In our culture---saturated with R-E-L-E-N-T-L-E-S-S, ubiquitous media prodding us to engage in conflict of some kind and consumerism constantly---I believe that we need spaces of reflection.
Therefore, Samaritan Road Production Company is ferociously committed to creating space where people can come to stop...to sit still...to breathe...to think...to reflect...and figure out IF "E pluribus unum" or "out of many, one" is possible or desirable in the 21st century...and in 21st century American in particular...
Again, thank you for your interest in the Samaritan Road Production Company.
