An image from a sign posted near a cemetery in Newtown CT in December 2012 that asks the key question regarding gun violence in American life: Why? Why does gun violence continue to occur DAILY in communities across America? My hope is that the GunPlay(s) Initiative can aid us in answering this sobering question. May our thoughts and prayers be with Newtown CT and ALL those other American communities impacted by gun violence over this last year. ---Nicole Anderson Cobb, PhD, GunPlay(s) 2013-2014 Founder/Convening Playwright
Greetings from Nicole Anderson Cobb, PhD, GunPlay(s) Convener/Founding Playwright. I hope this message reaches you in the midst of wonderful holidays...and that you are safe and well as winter weather swirls through the country.
As we approach the anniversary of the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary tomorrow, I wanted to be in touch to offer my condolences to those in the Newtown CT community and all others in communities that have been impacted by gun violence this year.
I am also writing to update you on the GunPlay(s) Competition 2013-2014:
---To date, I have received over 250 plays from diverse playwrights across the US, Canada, Europe (and even New Zealand) who have submitted riveting, engaging plays on gun violence from across the political spectrum. Consequently, I was amazed, pleased and humbled that this call for plays struck a chord with so many writers around the globe.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU for honoring my call and circulating the information to prompt others to use their talents to explore gun violence in American life.

---Now that the competition is closed, I have convened my initial panel of 20+ judges (from Illinois, New York, Michigan North Carolina, Texas, Maryland, and California) in the fields of theater, education and law. They are now evaluating the plays for the first round of discussion in mid-January 2014.
---Regarding planning for the GunPlay(s) Playreading Festival itself, the GunPlay(s) project is attracting interest from a larger number of university partners, community partners, entertainment professionals and national media.
Therefore, we are moving the festival to the fall 2014 to give us more time for planning and expanding our GunPlay(s) initiatives and programming.
***Furthermore, if you are affiliated with individuals, organizations or institutions that wants to be creative partners/contributors/co-sponsors/institutional partners with us on this GLOBAL GunPlay(s) project, please let me know and I can be in touch with them.
In the meantime, feel free to be in touch with additional questions or concerns, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE GUNPLAY(S) COMPETITION 2013-2014 and have wonderful holidays and New Year.
